Terrasta: A New Model for Community-Centered Hospitality and Urban Renewal in Miyakonojo

Terrasta, designed by UDS Ltd., stands as a transformative project in the heart of Miyakonojo City, northern Kyushu, Japan. Conceived as more than just a hotel, Terrasta merges the concepts of "terrace" and "stage," symbolizing a vibrant communal platform that supports both local residents and visitors. Developed in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the project directly responds to community needs for quality accommodations and dynamic public spaces, aiming to reestablish the city center as a lively destination.

The hotel's architecture and interior design draw deeply from the region's heritage. Its exterior features Shinmoe Brick, crafted from volcanic ash of Mt. Shinmoe, while interiors are finished with Takachiho Shirasu plaster and local lava stones. Warm brick hues, wood, and brass elements, paired with Japanese aesthetics, create an inviting atmosphere. Terrasta's seven stories house 93 guest rooms, two restaurants, a public lounge, and a variety of tenant spaces including a supermarket, rental offices, and a local radio station-each thoughtfully integrated to serve both guests and the broader community.

What sets Terrasta apart is its commitment to collaboration and local empowerment. The project involved partnerships with over ten local artists, designers, and students, resulting in unique art installations and guestroom designs that celebrate Miyakonojo's creative talent. Amenities and tableware are sourced from area businesses, reinforcing the hotel's role as a showcase for regional craftsmanship. Public amenities on the lower floors seamlessly connect to the city plaza, inviting residents and travelers alike to gather, shop, and participate in community life. This holistic approach has earned Terrasta the prestigious Silver A' Design Award 2025, recognizing its excellence in interior space, retail, and exhibition design.

Terrasta's realization marks a pivotal step in Miyakonojo's urban renewal, transforming a once-quiet shopping district into a hub of creativity, commerce, and connection.
