Cotton Boll Lounge: A Fusion of Çukurova's Cultural Identity and Modern Passenger Experience at Çukurova Airport

The Cotton Boll lounge, designed by Ece Gülağaç and unveiled in September 2024 at Çukurova Airport, stands as a testament to the region's rich cultural tapestry and commitment to passenger well-being. Drawing inspiration from the cotton fields, handcrafted textiles, and historical architecture of southern Turkey, the lounge offers travelers a refined environment that seamlessly merges tradition with modernity. The project's 765-square-meter space encompasses a main lounge, semi-open terrace, and crew resting area, all meticulously crafted to enhance comfort, sustainability, and regional identity.

A defining feature of the Cotton Boll lounge is its curvilinear ceiling, inspired by the linear textures of local cotton fields and the "Flow" concept of the airline's brand identity. Natural cotton fabrics, flexible LED lighting, and mirrored ceiling panels create a sense of fluidity, softness, and spatial openness, while diffused illumination ensures visual comfort. The design further incorporates distinctive patterns reminiscent of cotton bolls, integrated into illuminated panels and seating niches, offering both aesthetic depth and a welcoming atmosphere. The food and beverage area is adorned with a handcrafted mosaic panel, merging motifs from Çukurova's carpet weaving and historical mosaics, realized through over 3,500 individually assembled aluminum pieces that interact dynamically with light and movement.

Sustainability and user experience are at the heart of the design. Locally sourced, fire-resistant materials were chosen for durability and safety, while the spatial arrangement promotes intuitive flow and relaxation. The lounge's interactive elements and thoughtful use of natural materials create a sensory journey that reflects the essence of the region, making travel more enjoyable and meaningful. Overcoming regulatory, technical, and creative challenges, the Cotton Boll lounge sets a new standard for airport hospitality, offering a unique and immersive cultural experience that has now been recognized with the prestigious Golden A' Design Award.
