Renowned Turkish designer Yilmaz Dogan has been honored with the Silver A' Design Award 2025 for his Topkapi sideboard, a striking furniture piece inspired by the geometric artistry of Turkish-Islamic architecture and crafted through a blend of traditional woodworking and modern technology. The award-winning design was developed between June 2022 and February 2023, drawing direct inspiration from Istanbul's historic Topkapi Palace and Blue Mosque.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Yilmaz Dogan's Topkapi sideboard stands as a testament to the enduring influence of Anatolian and Turkish-Islamic art, seamlessly merging centuries-old geometric motifs with state-of-the-art production techniques. Conceived in the garden of Topkapi Palace and completed in Ankara, the sideboard's design draws from the intricate ornamentation found in Ottoman and Seljuk architecture, notably the "Mukarnas" and "Zencerek" patterns. The piece's six blue front legs, tipped with brass, pay homage to the six minarets of the Blue Mosque, while the name itself references the palace where such patterns adorned the walls.
Crafted from high-quality lacquer and natural wood, Topkapi's body is shaped using CNC technology, allowing for precise geometric patterns on the doors, which are then enhanced by meticulous handcraftsmanship. The result is a tactile, three-dimensional surface that captures the mystical essence of the East. The interior, finished in deep red lacquer, evokes a luxurious ambiance, and the patina-brushed copper top panel-handmade by skilled artisans-adds further depth and character. Brass detailing on the tapered legs references Ottoman palace furniture, uniting historical inspiration with contemporary elegance.
Functionality is at the heart of Topkapi's design, offering a spacious four-door storage area with a soft-opening mechanism, an optimized shelf system for items of varying sizes, and a central wide drawer for valuables. The sideboard not only serves as a focal point in modern interiors but also invites users on a cultural journey, creating an emotional connection through its rich heritage and innovative execution. Overcoming the challenge of blending traditional craftsmanship with modern methods, Topkapi exemplifies how design can bridge past and future, earning its place among the most remarkable works recognized by the A' Design Award jury.
