SUIADR's Kengzi Shenzhen Fire Station, completed in April 2021 in Pingshan District, Shenzhen, has been honored with the Bronze A' Design Award 2025 for its pioneering U-shaped courtyard design, which maximizes operational efficiency, enhances firefighter well-being, and sets a new benchmark for fire station architecture in high-density urban environments.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Kengzi Shenzhen Fire Station, designed by SUIADR and led by chief designer Zhong Zhong, stands as a landmark project at the intersection of Danzi Avenue and Baozi Middle Road in Shenzhen's Pingshan District. Occupying a 5,960.64 sqm irregular trapezoidal plot, the station leverages its unique site by integrating urban green spaces and panoramic views into its architectural concept. The result is a rare, large U-shaped inner courtyard that not only maximizes internal activity space but also preserves a vital "breathing space" for firefighters and the surrounding community.
The design addresses the challenges of Shenzhen's high-density urban landscape and irregular site constraints through a standardized yet personalized approach. The three-story service building and seven-story training tower are arranged to facilitate rapid emergency response, with fire engines exiting directly onto urban roads. The ground floor houses essential public and operational areas, while upper floors are dedicated to duty rooms, offices, and auxiliary spaces. Multiple roof gardens and recreational facilities, including a running track and basketball court, further enrich the daily lives of firefighters, promoting both physical and mental well-being.
Constructed using aerated and reinforced concrete envelopes, aluminum alloy framed windows, and Low-E insulated glass, the station exemplifies both durability and energy efficiency. The project draws on extensive research from the "2014 Shenzhen Fire Station Standardization Design Workshop" and sets a new standard for fire station construction in China. Its innovative layout, technical rigor, and focus on human-centered design have garnered it the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award 2025, recognizing its contribution to improving quality of life and advancing architectural best practices.
