Beijing-based ToThree Design has unveiled "The Sea Vibes," a striking installation at the entrance of a Dalian Bay residential project, inspired by the movement and beauty of the sea. Completed in just four months, this immersive artwork uses 6,000 copper plates to evoke the dynamic energy of ocean waves, earning the prestigious Golden A' Design Award for Architecture in 2019.

ToThree Design's latest public installation, "The Sea Vibes," stands as a monumental tribute to the natural beauty and vitality of Dalian Bay. Located at the entrance of a new residential development along the shore, the installation was conceived to echo the sea's presence, using the visual language of waves to create a cohesive and immersive experience for residents and visitors alike. The design team, led by He Yang and supported by six collaborators, drew inspiration from the ever-changing seascape, integrating the motif of waves throughout the demonstration center's logo, lighting, and signage for a unified aesthetic.
The centerpiece of the installation is an 8-meter diameter cylinder crafted from double-layer copper plates. Each of the 6,000 plates is meticulously suspended within a custom frame, arranged in a specific permutation to simulate the undulating motion of ocean waves. As viewers move around the structure, the plates appear to ripple, creating a sense of endless movement. When the sea breeze passes through, the copper plates shimmer and reflect light, conjuring the image of spindrift and capturing the ephemeral qualities of water in a permanent form.
Realizing this vision posed significant creative and technical challenges, particularly in achieving a sense of fluid motion from a fixed installation. The solution-a cylindrical form with individually hung copper plates-successfully transforms static materials into a dynamic, interactive spectacle. "The Sea Vibes" not only enhances the entrance experience but also serves as a landmark that connects the architecture to its coastal environment. Its innovative approach and visual impact were recognized with the Golden A' Design Award in 2019, underscoring ToThree Design's reputation for blending smart aesthetics with meaningful public contributions.
