"Conch" Public Installation: A Fusion of Fibonacci Spirals, Urban Sculpture, and Interactive Art by ToThree Design

ToThree Design has achieved international acclaim with its "Conch" public installation, awarded the prestigious Platinum A' Design Award in 2025. Situated in Xiamen and completed in November 2022, "Conch" stands as a striking example of how art, mathematics, and urban design can intersect to create spaces that inspire reflection and curiosity. The installation's elliptical metal rings, arranged in a Fibonacci spiral, evoke forms found in nature-such as conch shells and infinity symbols-while seamlessly integrating with the city's landscape.

The 2m x 1.7m x 3.2m sculpture is constructed from 30 elliptical stainless steel rings, each precisely angled and layered using parametric design software. This approach ensures both structural stability and a visually lightweight, rhythmic form. Concealed within the base is a water feature, with hidden nozzles and pipes that extend the spiral's curves into the surrounding pool, adding a dynamic, flowing element that enhances the installation's vitality and appeal. The interplay of polished metal and water creates captivating reflections and invites visitors to engage with the sculpture from multiple perspectives.

"Conch" is more than an aesthetic landmark; it is a celebration of mathematical harmony, natural rhythms, and human creativity. By employing advanced computer simulations and CNC precision cutting, ToThree Design overcame significant technical challenges to realize the seamless transitions and intricate details of the sculpture. The installation encourages public interaction and contemplation, offering a modern yet timeless space that connects urban dwellers with the deeper patterns of the natural world. Its recognition with the Platinum A' Design Award underscores its role in advancing the boundaries of art and design while contributing to the cultural and social fabric of the city.
