Responsive Spaces, a creative technology studio based in Linz, Austria, has received the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award 2025 for Zeit-los, a spatial light installation that reimagines how time is perceived and experienced within collaborative environments. Installed in a client's workshop rooms, Zeit-los leverages 18 custom LED light tubes, suspended with a specially developed steel cable mounting system, to create a visually striking and interactive centerpiece.
The inspiration for Zeit-los stemmed from fundamental questions about the value and perception of time: How do we use our time? Can it be planned or branded? Responsive Spaces addressed these themes by developing a digital media installation that is both unobtrusive and highly functional. The installation features four distinct visual modes-time, sign, stop, and plan-each accessible and customizable via a dedicated mobile application. Users can adjust colors, timings, and even display real-time weather data, making Zeit-los a versatile tool for recording time, serving as a workshop clock, or acting as an interactive hourglass and event backdrop.
The design process involved overcoming technical challenges related to pixel arrangement and abstract visualization, resulting in an installation that not only enhances the aesthetics of the space but also supports collaboration and creativity. Zeit-los's unique approach to visualizing time, combined with its ease of use and adaptability, sets it apart from traditional installations. The recognition from the A' Design Award highlights Responsive Spaces' commitment to blending immersive storytelling with cutting-edge technology, ultimately enriching the environments where people meet, work, and innovate.
