Ruman Origin Farmstead: A Fusion of Tradition, Sustainability, and Modern Rural Living in Western Sichuan

Ruman Origin Farmstead, designed by Xinyao Han and realized by Sichuan Mountain Water View Planning and Design Co., Ltd, stands as a pioneering example of rural revitalization on the fringes of Chengdu. Responding to the growing desire among urban dwellers to reconnect with nature and heritage, the project integrates the rustic charm of Western Sichuan's countryside with the comforts and sustainability of modern architecture. The farmstead, completed in June 2023 after more than three years of research, design, and construction, serves as a multifunctional space for accommodation, exhibitions, social gatherings, and living, all set within a serene rice paddy landscape.

The architectural concept is centered around three distinct courtyards, each symbolizing a different era and approach to rural living. The first courtyard, constructed entirely from wood, pays homage to traditional Western Sichuan aesthetics and serves as a welcoming reception area. The second courtyard introduces a modern, multifunctional restaurant space, reflecting openness and adaptability. The third courtyard, a forward-looking dwelling unit, combines traditional forms with contemporary, eco-friendly technologies, embodying a vision for sustainable rural lifestyles. The project's design process was informed by extensive local research, ensuring that the needs and cultural practices of the community were thoughtfully integrated.

Technologically, the farmstead sets itself apart with its energy-efficient features, including solar photovoltaic panels, ground source heat pumps, raised floors, rammed earth facades, and advanced double-layer hollow doors and windows. These elements drastically reduce energy consumption while maintaining comfort and harmony with the natural environment. The project's total construction area spans 1,200 square meters within a 4,000-square-meter site, making it not only a model of innovative rural architecture but also a catalyst for cultural restoration and social engagement. By bridging past, present, and future, Ruman Origin Farmstead encourages a renewed appreciation for rural life and demonstrates how architecture can foster sustainable, community-oriented living.
