Cafe Lusso: A Serene Urban Escape Celebrated for Design Excellence and Innovation

Cafe Lusso, designed by Seoul-based design group 21GRAM, stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful spatial design in transforming urban experiences. Inspired by the philosophy of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and the desire to provide a natural sanctuary amidst the city's skyscrapers, Lusso offers a unique blend of tranquility and sophistication. The project, completed in March 2024 in Mapo-gu, Seoul, has quickly become a celebrated destination for those seeking respite from the fast-paced city life.

The 230-square-meter cafe distinguishes itself through the strategic use of natural materials such as wood, stone, and brick, which develop character and warmth over time. Small indoor gardens are thoughtfully placed among seating areas, providing visual and psychological comfort while fostering social interaction. Curved steel partitions covered in fabric diffuse light softly, inspired by the welcoming shade of the traditional Zelkova tree at Korean village entrances. These design choices not only enhance the ambiance but also reflect a deep commitment to sustainability and human-centered design.

Lusso's harmonious integration of Eastern sensibilities and modern urban aesthetics is further emphasized by wooden louvers and carefully selected greenery, creating a gentle balance between openness and privacy. The cafe's design philosophy centers on the interaction between space and its visitors, encouraging relaxation, conversation, and a renewed appreciation for the passage of time. This innovative approach has earned Lusso the prestigious Silver A' Design Award, recognizing its excellence in interior space and retail design and its role in redefining the urban cafe experience.
