WATARU OMAMEUDA's Tokyo Apartment stands as a pioneering example of residential architecture that responds directly to the evolving needs of urban living in a post-pandemic world. Completed in July 2024 after a design and construction process spanning nearly four years, this ten-story building in Tokyo features just one unit per floor, each with expansive windows on three sides and deep balconies to maximize natural light, ventilation, and a sense of openness. The project was inspired by the communal atmosphere of hotel lobby lounges, aiming to foster spontaneous interaction among residents and guests while providing a calm, inviting environment beneath the shade of a symbolic tree.
Unique in its approach, the Tokyo Apartment integrates the pleasant views of surrounding ginkgo trees into daily living, with window placements carefully chosen to enhance this connection to nature. The design transforms contemporary residential needs into three core concepts: a vibrant apartment community, a resilient post-corona home, and a flexible structural platform. The building's structure is notable for its innovative elimination of a central reinforced concrete column, replaced by a void slab, and the use of reverse beams to secure panoramic southwestern views. These technical advancements were developed in tandem with the building's facade, which features soft, natural textures created by cedar plank formwork on concrete pillars and beams.
The Tokyo Apartment's interior spaces are designed for modern lifestyles, offering flexible rooms that accommodate remote work, online learning, and generous storage. The ground-floor lounge, intentionally zoned as a communal entry space, serves as a catalyst for new neighborly connections, addressing the traditional lack of community in Japanese apartment complexes. This project not only sets a new benchmark for sustainable, community-oriented living but also demonstrates how thoughtful design can create extraordinary residential experiences reminiscent of boutique hotels. The recognition by the Iron A' Design Award underscores the project's success in blending functional innovation, social responsibility, and aesthetic excellence.
