Sreed Ebisu T: Innovative Hybrid Timber and Steel Office Building Reimagines Urban Workspaces in Tokyo

Sreed Ebisu T, designed by Motoki Yasuhara and his team, is a pioneering nine-story office building located in the heart of Ebisu, Shibuya-ward, Tokyo. Conceived during the COVID-19 pandemic, the project addresses the evolving needs of modern workspaces by offering an environment that is both inviting and conducive to collaboration. The building stands as a response to the question of what makes an office worth visiting after the rise of remote work, blending the comfort of home with the benefits of shared, creative spaces.

The building's standout feature is its innovative hybrid structure, combining a steel post-and-beam frame with timber seismic frames-dubbed the "seismic timber lattice shell." This approach not only ensures structural integrity and fire safety but also creates a warm, relaxed atmosphere that leverages the unique spatial qualities of timber. Unlike conventional urban timber buildings that simply substitute materials, Sreed Ebisu T's design integrates timber as both a seismic and interior element, enhancing the workspace experience and fostering a sense of community.

Spanning a total floor area of 564.7 square meters, the building accommodates restaurants and retail on the lower floors, with flexible office spaces above. Common terraces and a thoughtfully designed staircase encourage interaction and outdoor breaks, stimulating creativity and collaboration among tenants. The project overcame significant technical challenges, particularly in the detailed design and fabrication of steel-timber joints, achieved through close teamwork and advanced 3D data sharing. Sreed Ebisu T not only addresses Japan's push for sustainable timber construction but also sets a new benchmark for urban office design, earning the Silver A' Design Award for its innovation and excellence.
