Shantou Marriott Hotel: A Celebration of Modern Elegance and Regional Culture in Hospitality Design

Located at the confluence of three rivers and surrounded by mountains in Shantou, Guangdong Province, the Shantou Marriott Hotel stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of contemporary luxury and the region's storied cultural legacy. Designed by Bo Liu and his team at Paul Liu Design Consultants, the hotel opened its doors in 2023 after a meticulous design process spanning from 2018 to 2021. The project's vision was to create a sophisticated sanctuary that both honors and reinterprets Chaoshan's unique heritage for discerning global travelers.

The hotel's 315 guest rooms and suites are thoughtfully crafted, drawing inspiration from the area's intangible cultural heritage. Upon entering, guests are greeted by a striking mural panel-measuring 8150mm by 4800mm-that reimagines the "Four Gold Points" concept, a cherished symbol of Chaoshan culture. The design leverages traditional Lingnan architectural elements, such as timber frameworks and green brick infills, while incorporating modern materials and streamlined layouts. This approach results in open, airy spaces that seamlessly connect indoor and outdoor environments, fostering a sense of tranquility and relaxation.

Throughout the hotel, soft natural tones and carefully selected materials evoke a serene ambiance, while artistic installations and cultural motifs pay homage to Shantou's history and landscape. The design team overcame significant challenges, including the integration of durable, corrosion-resistant materials suitable for the coastal environment and the distillation of diverse local traditions into a cohesive, contemporary aesthetic. Since its opening, the Shantou Marriott Hotel has enjoyed consistently high occupancy rates, reflecting its success as a harmonious and inviting destination for guests seeking both comfort and cultural enrichment.
