Yokohama Chigasakihigashi, a visionary housing project by Kei Tamai and architect Shin Takamatsu, has been honored with the Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award for 2025. Located in the suburbs of Yokohama, this development challenges the norms of urban housing by reviving traditional Japanese values that emphasize harmony with the natural world. The project stands out for its innovative "sky room" and courtyard-centric design, which allow residents to experience the sky and changing weather from within their homes, fostering a deep connection to nature.
The design draws inspiration from historical Japanese homes, such as Kyoto's machiya, which were built to bring natural elements like light and air into daily life, even in densely populated areas. In contrast to modern homes that often prioritize insulation and privacy at the expense of openness, Yokohama Chigasakihigashi reimagines living spaces to embrace the outdoors. The flexible layout features a central courtyard, or "sky room," surrounded by simple white spaces, enabling residents to center their lives around this open area or seamlessly blend it with adjacent rooms. Large windows and thoughtful orientation ensure abundant natural light, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and energy.
Completed in phases since 2016, the project's latest "IN THE SKY" residences continue the tradition of integrating architecture with the environment. Residents enjoy a variety of lifestyles, moving freely between the courtyard and surrounding spaces, while the ever-changing sky, bird songs, and natural breezes enrich their daily experiences. The development also addresses the challenge of maintaining quality in a market dominated by mass-produced housing, demonstrating that thoughtful design and collaboration with leading architects can deliver lasting value and beauty. The Golden A' Design Award recognizes Yokohama Chigasakihigashi as a trendsetting achievement that advances the art and science of architecture.
