Takumi Restaurant: A Theatrical Fusion of Japanese Tradition and Modern Design in Shanghai

Takumi, designed by NI Space Design, reimagines the robatayaki dining tradition with a bold, contemporary twist in the heart of Shanghai. Inspired by the communal and sensory nature of Japanese robatayaki, the restaurant departs from classic motifs, instead embracing sweeping curves, layered seating, and dramatic high ceilings. The central robatayaki bar serves as the focal point, with seating arranged to provide every guest an immersive view of the culinary artistry at work, while glass brick walls and interwoven arcs create a sense of depth and theatricality throughout the space.

Material innovation is at the core of Takumi's design. The use of metal mesh, mosaic tiles, glass bricks, and terrazzo flooring introduces a sense of transparency and modernity, enhancing both openness and interaction among diners. The vibrant orange-red palette, balanced by cool gray tones, evokes the warmth and energy of fire, echoing the essence of robatayaki grilling. VIP booths are highlighted for their luxurious feel, while the waiting area features a flaming washi paper artwork, setting the stage for a memorable dining experience from the moment guests arrive.

Since reopening, Takumi has seen a marked increase in per-customer spending, reflecting the success of its market repositioning and design strategy. The restaurant's unique blend of specialty cuisine and innovative interior design has attracted a more upscale clientele and established a loyal customer base. Despite challenges in material sourcing and adapting to Shanghai's high standards, the design team's adaptability ensured a finished space that seamlessly blends tradition with modern flair, offering diners a visual and sensory feast unlike any other in the city.
