FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Spiritual Casa, the latest residential project by Meng Chuan Ho, has captured international attention by winning the Iron A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2025. Located in the scenic countryside of Yilan, Taiwan, this 146-square-meter, four-story home was conceived for a Spanish and Taiwanese couple seeking to celebrate their diverse heritage. The design thoughtfully integrates both Chinese and Spanish traditions, using architectural forms, materials, and motifs to evoke a sense of belonging and nostalgia.
The residence features a striking triangular roof with Spanish tiles, complemented by Chinese-inspired screens and totem motifs. The interior is adorned with hand-woven rattan furniture crafted by local artisans, utilizing mortise and tenon joints to showcase Taiwanese craftsmanship. Spanish elements are further highlighted through wooden beams, a central island bar, and vibrant tile accents, while Chinese influences are subtly woven into the space with flowering crabapple motifs and antique coin patterns, symbolizing prosperity and good fortune.
Functionality and comfort are at the heart of Spiritual Casa's design. The entryway employs glass tiles and low cabinets to maintain openness between the kitchen and living room, while the kitchen's central island creates a smooth, hollow-square circulation path. In the master bedroom, a centrally placed chest of drawers allows for seamless movement between the sleeping and storage areas. The use of natural tones, textures, and carefully curated materials not only bridges Eastern and Western aesthetics but also fosters a warm, inviting atmosphere that connects the residents to their roots and the surrounding landscape.
Overcoming structural challenges, such as limited vertical space due to existing beams, the design team ingeniously incorporated a triangular roof in the kitchen to restore the essence of Spanish architecture, while a circular arc ceiling in the living room introduces a soft, flowing line reminiscent of traditional Chinese interiors. The result is a residence that stands as a testament to cultural integration, technical expertise, and the enduring power of thoughtful design.
