Thermal Spring at Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto

Strickland, a renowned design team, has unveiled a breathtaking Thermal Spring located in B1 at Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto in Japan. The facility, inspired by the geology, spirituality, and memory of Kyoto, offers a unique and luxurious experience for guests seeking relaxation and wellness.

The Thermal Spring, completed in November 2020, is a testament to the deep history and culture of Kyoto, situated in front of the historic Nijo castle. The design utilizes natural hot springs and incorporates the scenic beauty of Kyoto, creating a truly exceptional space in the basement floor of the hotel.

The design team, led by Yohei Akao, carefully researched the location and history of the land, ensuring that the space tells a unique story that is deeply rooted in its surroundings. The project presented various challenges, including the fusion of a sacred atmosphere and geology, which were overcome through meticulous attention to detail and material selection.

The Thermal Spring covers a total area of 469 square meters, including the entrance, corridor, and other facilities such as spa treatment and fitness areas. The design incorporates elements such as modified scenic stones, indigo-dyed clay walls, and granite walls inspired by groundwater veins, creating a serene and immersive environment for guests.

Visitors to the Thermal Spring will experience a journey through the space, encountering stone objects, dripping water, and a deep indigo plastered clay wall, ultimately arriving at the thermal spring resembling a water garden.

Strickland's Thermal Spring design has been recognized with the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in 2021, reflecting the outstanding and trendsetting nature of the creation. The project showcases the design team's prodigy and wisdom, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with its desirable characteristics.
