FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tsong Yo Interior Design has announced the completion of the Language Center at Tunghai University, a project that recently earned the Silver A' Design Award for Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design in 2025. This transformative renovation reimagines the university's Chinese department, creating a shared space that honors the depth of Chinese culture while embracing a contemporary, international sensibility. The design draws inspiration from the yin-yang philosophy, balancing tradition and innovation to foster a welcoming, open environment for students from around the world.
Central to the project is the reinterpretation of traditional wooden eaves and the preservation of original materials such as sandalwood and terrazzo, which connect the space to Taiwan's cultural heritage. The cross-shaped circulation at the entrance maximizes spatial flow and natural light, while black-and-white Tai Chi motifs symbolize harmony throughout the center. Large floor-to-ceiling windows open the interior to a central courtyard, enhancing the sense of openness and connection to nature. The lounge, reading areas, and classrooms are thoughtfully zoned for both functionality and comfort, with clear pathways ensuring efficient movement.
Sustainability and local identity are at the heart of the design, with eco-friendly materials like natural wood veneer and preserved terrazzo flooring featured prominently. The color palette, inspired by Tai Chi, contrasts pure whites with deep grays, creating a scholarly yet inviting atmosphere. Feedback from teachers and students has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the brighter, more spacious ambiance and the successful integration of Chinese and Taiwanese elements. The Language Center stands as a model of how educational spaces can honor cultural legacy while adapting to the needs of a diverse, global student body.
