Ya-Yuan Design and Shanghefa Development have been honored with the Golden A' Design Award 2025 for "Urban Clouds," a congregate housing project completed in December 2023 in Taiwan's administrative and cultural district. This modern residential building blends architectural innovation with natural and cultural elements, redefining urban living through elegance, environmental harmony, and community-focused design.

Urban Clouds: Award-Winning Residential Architecture Integrates Nature, Culture, and Modern Design in Kaohsiung

"Urban Clouds" stands as a striking example of how contemporary architecture can harmonize with both its environment and the cultural fabric of a city. Located in a vibrant district surrounded by green spaces, the project was conceived by Ya-Yuan Design and Shanghefa Development to offer residents a high quality of life, blending modern aesthetics with local heritage. The building's design is anchored by its unique roof, which mimics drifting clouds through a sophisticated interplay of space and light, achieved using advanced parametric design methods. This approach transforms the three-dimensional beauty of clouds into a dynamic two-dimensional structure, creating a facade that changes with the movement of the sun throughout the day.

The 15-story building occupies a 1,078-square-meter site and is carefully positioned to reduce its mass and enhance approachability, with two distinct volumes at the front and rear. The facade features a complex beam and column system, giving the structure a refined, modern appearance while maintaining a sense of understated grandeur. Inside, the first-floor lobby is adorned with a metal installation on the ceiling, evoking the flow of wind and reinforcing the connection to nature. This artful integration of natural motifs not only elevates the urban experience but also provides a serene, welcoming atmosphere for residents and visitors alike.

Material selection was central to the project's realization, with beige-gray marble and silver-glazed wall tiles chosen for their warmth, brightness, and subtle texture. Transparent glass and clean architectural lines further enhance the interplay of light and shadow, creating a bright and inviting living environment. Every detail, from the lattice design on the top floor to the calibrated nighttime lighting, was meticulously planned to ensure both functionality and visual appeal. Despite challenges such as working within a predetermined floor plan, the design team leveraged digital tools and creative problem-solving to bring their vision to life, ultimately delivering a residential space that is both efficient and emotionally resonant. The Golden A' Design Award recognizes "Urban Clouds" as a trendsetting achievement in architecture, advancing the dialogue between nature, culture, and urban living.
