Eastern Institute for Advanced Study: Award-Winning Interior Design for a Modern Academic Campus in Zhejiang, China

The Eastern Institute for Advanced Study, a collaborative effort led by renowned designer Xin Xu, has officially opened its doors in Zhejiang, China, after a year-long design and construction process that began in July 2023. Conceived in partnership with entrepreneur Yu Renrong and supported by the Zhejiang Provincial and Ningbo Municipal Governments, the project aspires to cultivate world-class scientific and technological talent while establishing itself as a future century-old university of global repute. The interior design, recognized with the Silver A' Design Award in 2025, stands out for its commitment to creating open, collaborative, and inspiring learning spaces tailored to the unique identity of each academic discipline.

Drawing inspiration from the world's leading educational institutions, Xin Xu and the design team meticulously analyzed campus case studies both domestically and internationally. This research informed a flexible design strategy, where each building-such as the Engineering Building, School of Life Sciences, and Information Building-features distinctive interiors. Robust mechanized elements, ecological plant integration, and advanced technological installations are employed to evoke the spirit of each discipline, while adaptable furniture and versatile teaching areas allow for dynamic academic interactions. The thoughtful selection of colors, materials, and artworks further enhances the academic ambiance, fostering a sense of identity and belonging for students and faculty alike.

Spanning an impressive 1.5 million square meters, the campus interior design addresses the challenges of longevity, adaptability, and cultural resonance. The design team overcame significant creative and technical hurdles, benchmarking their solutions against the standards of top-tier universities worldwide. Their efforts have resulted in a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation, ensuring that the Eastern Institute for Advanced Study not only meets the immediate needs of its academic community but also stands as a model for future educational environments in China and beyond.
