The Ripple of Knowledge library, designed by Daisuke Nagatomo and Minnie Jan, marks a significant evolution in school library design. Completed in September 2024 at Longshan Elementary School in Taipei City, the project reimagines the library as a vibrant hub for exploration and creativity. Drawing inspiration from the natural movement of ripples, the space features curved elements, low-height cabinets, and flowing light strips that guide students through distinct zones while maintaining openness and visual continuity.
Central to the design is a multifunctional approach: low-height curved cabinets serve as storage, seating, and space dividers, allowing for flexible use and easy supervision by librarians. The library's corner is transformed into a stage area, equipped with long curved bookshelves, a projector, and a screen, enabling the space to host teaching sessions and events. An information area with tablets integrates technology into the learning process, giving students access to digital catalogs and interactive teaching tools.
Unique custom-designed bookends-one inspired by water ripples and another by the imagery of a dragon ball-symbolize the spread of knowledge and the spirit of Longshan Elementary School. The project was realized through a combination of pre-fabricated shelving and on-site carpentry, ensuring both precision and adaptability. The Ripple of Knowledge has been recognized with the Bronze A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2025, celebrating its role in fostering imagination and collaborative learning while setting a new standard for educational spaces.
