Reimagined Exhibition Halls Bring Evolution and Marine Biodiversity to Life Through Light, Immersion, and Interactivity

The Naturkundemuseum Stuttgart has marked a new era in science communication with the reopening of its Evolution and Ocean Halls, masterfully redesigned by Ralph Appelbaum Associates. Once open-air courtyards, these halls now harness natural light and immersive scenography to create dynamic environments where visitors can explore the interconnectedness of life on Earth. The Evolution Hall is anchored by a dramatic display of an African elephant bull and a European forest elephant, while the Ocean Hall features a striking cutaway model of a sei whale, both serving as focal points for engaging storytelling.

In the Evolution Hall, six thematic islands radiate around a central multimedia table, inviting visitors to investigate evolutionary concepts through hands-on interactives, digital games, and spectacular specimens. The design emphasizes the processes and pathways of scientific discovery, moving beyond traditional didactic displays to foster curiosity and understanding. The Ocean Hall, bathed in shifting blue light, guides guests through diverse marine habitats, from coastal shores to the deep sea, using models, touchable objects, and a captivating multimedia projection on the sei whale to illustrate the complexity and beauty of marine ecosystems.

The project, which began in March 2021 and opened to the public in February 2023, posed unique creative and technical challenges. The design team sought to make the topics of biodiversity and evolution accessible and engaging, demonstrating not just scientific results but also the methods and significance of research in natural history. By integrating historic specimens, intuitive interactives, and carefully curated media, the exhibition offers layered experiences that inspire awe and a deeper appreciation for the natural world. The result is a museum environment where visitors of all ages can connect with science in meaningful and memorable ways.
