Daisuke Nagatomo and Minnie Jan have transformed the historic National Kuan Hsi Senior High School in Hsinchu, Taiwan, into "Harmony," a dynamic cultural learning space that blends tradition and innovation. Completed in November 2024, the project preserves the school's agricultural heritage while introducing flexible, interdisciplinary environments to foster hands-on learning and collaboration.

Harmony, designed by Daisuke Nagatomo and Minnie Jan, reimagines the educational environment at National Kuan Hsi Senior High School, a site with a legacy dating back to 1924. The project centers on situational teaching, offering adaptable spaces and immersive digital media to meet diverse educational needs. By integrating flexible learning modules and interdisciplinary collaboration zones, Harmony empowers students to develop practical skills and tackle real-world problems, all within a setting that honors the school's agricultural roots.
A key feature of the design is the sensitive preservation and transformation of historical elements. Old tea-processing equipment, once central to the school's original mission, has been repurposed as artistic installations, serving as visual anchors that connect past and present. The design carefully balances the textures of history with contemporary aesthetics, ensuring that new interventions complement rather than overshadow the existing heritage. This approach not only maintains the site's cultural identity but also deepens students' connection to local traditions.
Sustainability and resourcefulness are woven throughout the project. By reusing furniture and equipment, Harmony minimizes waste and breathes new life into materials that might otherwise be discarded. The spatial layout encourages interaction and exploration, with dual pathways linking classrooms and the historic tea factory, inviting both students and visitors to engage with the space. Recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in Cultural Heritage and Culture Industry Design for 2025, Harmony stands as a model for educational environments that celebrate heritage while embracing innovation.
