Moriyuki Ochiai Architects has completed "Waterscape Colab," a transformative shared office space in Tokyo's Gotanda district, designed to unite diverse Japanese manufacturing companies and encourage the co-creation of new cultural and business values. The project, realized in collaboration with Japan Post Real Estate, draws inspiration from traditional Japanese crafts such as kimono making, origami, and furoshiki-each rooted in the creative use of limited resources. The centerpiece of the design is a single, recycled aluminum sheet that flows across the ceiling, forming undulating waves that reflect light and evoke the shimmering surface of historic rice paddies.
The dynamic ceiling not only creates a visually poetic atmosphere but also defines distinct zones within the 800sqm office. At the entrance, dramatic waves foster a sense of movement and invite stimulating encounters. In lounge and desk areas, the waves calm and rise, offering open, relaxing environments for focused work. Meanwhile, the bar and kitchen areas are enveloped by lower, more intimate waves, encouraging deeper conversations and social interaction. The interplay of natural light with the metallic surface ensures that the ambiance shifts subtly throughout the day, providing a variety of spatial experiences for users.
Sustainability is central to the project's ethos. The use of recycled aluminum and a modular assembly method allows the ceiling to be disassembled and reinstalled, minimizing waste and reducing relocation costs for future moves. This approach not only highlights the adaptability of traditional Japanese ingenuity but also addresses contemporary environmental concerns. The "Waterscape Colab" stands as a testament to the enduring relevance of Japanese craftsmanship, blending heritage with forward-thinking design to create a workspace that inspires creativity and collaboration among artisans and innovators alike.
