Beijing Forestry University has achieved international recognition with its "Curved" chair, which was awarded the prestigious Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2025. Developed by designer GongWei and the university's design team, the project began in Beijing in January 2024 and concluded in June 2024. The chair draws inspiration from the flowing forms of high mountains and water depicted in traditional Chinese ink paintings, reimagined through the use of natural Indonesian rattan and contemporary design principles.
The "Curved" chair stands out for its seamless integration of traditional rattan weaving craftsmanship and modern aesthetics. Its gently undulating rattan lines evoke the dynamic brushstrokes of Chinese landscape art, creating a serene and harmonious visual effect. Beyond its artistic appeal, the chair is meticulously engineered for comfort, with ergonomic features such as carefully tested armrest heights, stable legs, and thoughtfully contoured seat and backrest. Each element is designed to provide optimal support and stability, ensuring a comfortable seating experience while maintaining visual elegance.
Production of the "Curved" chair involves a series of refined manual processes, including material selection, steaming, hot bending, shaping, polishing, and painting. The use of high-quality, waterproof, and durable Indonesian rattan ensures both longevity and a luxurious tactile experience. The chair's minimalist yet expressive form challenges conventional rattan furniture design, achieving a balance between aesthetic beauty and practical function. Its versatile style allows it to harmonize with various indoor and outdoor environments, making it a meaningful addition to any space and a testament to the enduring value of cultural heritage in contemporary design.
