Mistuhiro Shoji's "Work at Nagasaki" has been recognized with the Silver A' Design Award 2025 for its groundbreaking approach to co-working, seamlessly integrating Nagasaki's natural landscape and historical influences into a modern, collaborative office environment located in the city's historic center.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Work at Nagasaki, designed by Mistuhiro Shoji and his team, stands as a pioneering co-working space that redefines the relationship between work, nature, and history. Situated in the heart of Nagasaki's old city center, the project draws inspiration from extensive fieldwork, local materials, and the city's unique blend of Western and Chinese architectural influences. The design incorporates aged natural materials and historical styles, creating a creative environment that feels both contemporary and deeply rooted in its surroundings.
The two-floor, 4,500-square-meter facility occupies the 10th and 11th floors of a prime building, offering panoramic views of the Nagasaki mountain range and the city's historic landscape. The 10th floor features a reception area, event space, and open office zones, while the 11th floor houses private offices and a conference room. A grand staircase connects the levels, serving as both a visual centerpiece and a flexible seminar space. The interior utilizes raw Isahaya stone for furniture, a 5.5-meter steel plate counter crafted with shipbuilding technology, and locally sourced Sendan wood, all carefully selected to reflect the city's heritage and natural beauty.
Designed to foster creativity and collaboration, Work at Nagasaki accommodates teams from one to thirty people and welcomes companies, students, and startups from around the world. The flexible layout allows users to choose their preferred workspace, from open, rough-hewn areas to modern luxury settings, all while experiencing the changing landscape through expansive views and natural materials. The project overcame significant challenges in material selection and construction, prioritizing authenticity and tactile quality over synthetic alternatives, and was realized through close collaboration with local producers and artisans. Awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2025, Work at Nagasaki sets a new standard for co-working environments that honor both place and innovation.
