Teru Sushi Redefines Restaurant Design with Immersive, Theater-Style Culinary Space in Fukuoka

Teru Sushi, located in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka, has emerged as a groundbreaking example of restaurant design, earning the prestigious Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award for 2025. Under the creative direction of interior designer Norihiko Terai, the restaurant underwent a remarkable transformation, completed in just 90 days, that reimagines the dining experience as a form of immersive entertainment. The project was inspired by the Japanese tea ceremony, with guests entering through a carefully crafted passage that builds anticipation before revealing a dramatic, stage-like counter at the heart of the space.

The design distinguishes itself through its theatrical approach, utilizing a circular counter that acts as a stage where diners can closely observe the chef's artistry. The interior features a sophisticated blend of traditional materials-such as earthen walls and crafted ceramic tiles rooted in the Mino pottery tradition-alongside modern touches like nuanced lighting and polished stone finishes. The black-toned ambiance, coffered ceiling, and natural textures foster intimacy and highlight the sensory presentation of both cuisine and performance, creating a memorable and engaging environment for every guest.

Research and careful spatial analysis informed the project, revealing a growing demand for entertainment within dining. The design team overcame challenges of limited space and the need to harmonize tradition with innovation by integrating performance elements, optimizing lighting, and ensuring material harmony. The result is a unique restaurant that not only honors Japanese culture and craftsmanship but also sets a new standard for luxury dining, attracting widespread attention and acclaim both locally and on social media. Teru Sushi now stands as a model for how spatial design can elevate culinary art into a holistic, theatrical experience.
