Wulin Star Exhibition Hall: Merging Historical Preservation with Modern Functionality in Hangzhou

The Wulin Star Exhibition Hall, designed by YINPING YAO and the ZPDI team, stands as a testament to Hangzhou's commitment to preserving its industrial heritage while embracing contemporary cultural needs. Located within the protected structures of the former Hangzhou Oxygen Plant, the project began construction in March 2024 and officially opened to the public in November of the same year. The design philosophy centers on allowing history and the future to intersect, transforming the space into a medium for storytelling and community engagement.

Key to the project's uniqueness is its meticulous approach to renovation. The original spatial appearance and details of the factory buildings were preserved, while innovative features-such as an 8.5-meter-high revolving aluminum door and a nine-ton LED folding screen-were seamlessly integrated. These industrial elements not only respect the site's legacy but also introduce dynamic, interactive experiences for visitors. The reorganization of pipelines and the introduction of custom mechanical devices further enhance the building's functionality without compromising its historic character.

Designed as a model for the protection and adaptive reuse of industrial heritage in Hangzhou, the Wulin Star Exhibition Hall fosters public participation and cultural exchange. Its flexible, open spaces accommodate exhibitions, art, and commercial activities, making it a beloved "cultural living room" for the city's residents. The project's technical achievements, such as the trackless revolving door and suspended folding screen, overcame significant engineering challenges, setting new benchmarks for urban renewal. Recognized with the Silver A' Design Award in 2025, the Wulin Star Exhibition Hall exemplifies how thoughtful design can bridge past and future, enriching urban life and cultural identity.
