The Environmental Protection Bureau, Yunlin, has unveiled the Climate Center in the Yunlin High-Speed Rail Special Zone, completed in December 2026, as a forward-thinking public building that blends rural heritage with modern sustainability, offering innovative workspaces and community facilities to support the region's rapid urban transformation.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Climate Center, designed by the Environmental Protection Bureau, Yunlin, stands as a pioneering public building in the rapidly developing Yunlin High-Speed Rail Special Zone. Completed in December 2026, the project responds to the area's transformation from rural farmland into a vibrant urban hub by harmonizing tradition with modern efficiency. The building's design draws inspiration from local settlements and farmland patterns, resulting in an L-shaped structure that optimizes wind flow, reduces energy consumption, and visually connects with the surrounding landscape.
Departing from conventional government architecture, the Climate Center features interconnected office communities that balance departmental independence with shared spaces, fostering collaboration and adaptability. The six-story building, with one basement level and a total floor area of approximately 11,000 square meters, includes an international conference hall, green plaza, and accessible public facilities. Its exterior combines reinforced concrete, metal frameworks, wooden elements, and extensive vertical greenery, reflecting a commitment to both durability and ecological integration. A glass curtain wall maximizes natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting and enhancing energy efficiency.
The project faced significant challenges, including the uncertainty of ongoing urban development and the need to blend rural aesthetics with urban functions. Through a flexible, scalable layout and sustainable features such as zero-wastewater discharge and wind optimization, the Climate Center has become a model for climate change adaptation and green building practices. Employees benefit from collaborative workspaces and improved environmental comfort, while residents enjoy open, welcoming public areas that strengthen community engagement. The building's recognition with the Iron A' Design Award in 2025 underscores its innovative approach and positive impact on Yunlin's evolving identity.
