"Veins of Stone": Transforming an Abandoned Shell into a Modern, Nature-Connected Home in Beitou, Taiwan

Shan Chin Lee's latest residential project, "Veins of Stone," has been awarded the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category for 2025. Located in Beitou, Taiwan, this 165-square-meter residence was transformed from a long-abandoned shell into a refined modern home that harmonizes luxury, technology, and the surrounding landscape. The project was completed in January 2025 after an intensive design and construction process that began in June 2023.

The design centers around a striking marble island, whose bold, art-like presence anchors the living space and sets the tone for the entire home. Full-height windows frame sweeping views of the adjacent creek and forest, seamlessly blending the interior with its natural environment. Smart home systems are fully integrated, allowing for effortless control of lighting, climate, and sound, while custom illuminated storage and meticulously aligned materials elevate the residence beyond conventional standards.

Material precision and sustainability were key priorities throughout the project. The marble was carefully selected and mockup tested six times to achieve perfect grain alignment, while stainless steel cabinetry and low iron glass provide durability and texture. Eco-certified wood and recyclable materials ensure a healthier, environmentally conscious living space. The residence features three bedrooms, two living areas, and a kitchen, all designed with luxurious layers and premium finishes. Innovative solutions, such as a custom-engineered 150 cm motorized entrance door and concealed smart systems, demonstrate the project's technical excellence and attention to detail.

"Veins of Stone" exemplifies how contemporary luxury can be reimagined through the thoughtful integration of craftsmanship, technology, and environmental awareness. The project's recognition with the Silver A' Design Award highlights its outstanding expertise, creativity, and positive impact on residential design standards.
