Yuqi Wang's Accordion modular sofa, inspired by the dynamic bellows of an accordion, has been awarded the prestigious Golden A' Furniture Design Award 2025 for its unique single-module, shape-shifting design that enables endless configurations, flat-pack portability, and easy tool-free assembly, addressing modern needs for flexible, space-saving furniture solutions.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Yuqi Wang, based in Hangzhou, China, has unveiled the Accordion modular sofa, a groundbreaking piece of furniture that recently earned the Golden A' Furniture Design Award 2025. Drawing inspiration from the expanding and contracting bellows of an accordion, Wang's design introduces a single, transformable base module capable of morphing into countless sofa configurations. This innovation not only minimizes the need for multiple sofa specifications but also addresses key challenges in the furniture market, such as adaptability, portability, and ease of use.
The Accordion sofa stands out for its ability to compress both in size and shape. Constructed from high-resilience compressible foam and flanked by wooden side panels connected with durable climbing ropes and adjustable knobs, users can easily alter the sofa's dimensions by simply rotating the knobs. This intuitive mechanism allows for quick transformation and seamless connection between multiple modules, much like assembling Lego bricks. When compressed, the sofa's volume is reduced to just two-fifths of its original size, enabling flat-pack packaging that simplifies storage, transportation, and even allows the sofa to fit into a shopping cart or be carried on the back.
Wang's design process was informed by extensive research into user feedback, logistics, and market trends, revealing widespread dissatisfaction with bulky, inflexible sofas. The Accordion sofa directly addresses these issues, offering a playful, tool-free assembly experience and the versatility to suit any living space. The project began in December 2024 in Hangzhou and is set for commercial release in October 2025. By merging innovative engineering with user-centric design, the Accordion sofa not only advances the art and science of furniture but also sets a new benchmark for sustainability and convenience in modern living.
