Salamat Apartment: Redefining Urban Living Through Light Optimization, Contextual Design, and Material Innovation

Salamat Apartment, designed by Faezeh Tavasoliara, stands as a testament to architectural ingenuity in the face of urban constraints. Completed in 2025 in Hamedan, Iran, the project was conceived to address the challenges of an irregularly shaped plot, limited natural light, and stringent municipal regulations. Instead of resorting to conventional solutions like light wells, the design introduces strategic window placements, a fragmented yet unified brick façade, and a modular lattice shell that collectively optimize daylight, privacy, and spatial harmony for all residents.

The building's exterior features a custom-designed brick lattice, referencing local architectural traditions while offering a contemporary reinterpretation. This approach not only enhances the building's urban integration but also critiques and transcends restrictive zoning codes. The façade's dynamic interplay of light and shadow, achieved through perforated brick screens and carefully positioned openings, ensures that each apartment enjoys ample natural light and privacy, despite the site's limitations. Inside, the spatial organization prioritizes comfort and tranquility, with bedrooms oriented for privacy and living areas designed to maximize daylight and urban views.

Salamat Apartment's realization involved a thoughtful selection of materials and advanced design tools. Traditional brick was employed with modern techniques, while light simulation and parametric modeling informed the placement of windows and façade elements. The project's innovative solutions-such as a double-height atrium in the duplex units and efficient zoning of parking and living spaces-demonstrate how architectural creativity can overcome regulatory and physical barriers. The result is a cohesive, context-aware residential building that elevates quality of life and sets a new standard for urban apartment design in Iran.
