The Upper East Suite, designed by Guoqiang Feng and Yan Chen, is a meticulous renovation of a pre-war apartment in New York's Upper East Side Historic District. Inspired by the building's storied past and the owners' passion for 1930s Art Deco lighting and furniture, the designers set out to create a living space that harmoniously fuses historical elegance with the demands of contemporary urban life. The project began in June 2024 and concluded in February 2025, resulting in a residence that stands as a testament to thoughtful design and heritage preservation.
Central to the transformation was the integration of the owners' curated Art Deco collection from New York, Paris, and Shanghai, seamlessly woven into the apartment's layout. Custom floor-to-ceiling woodwork, including bookshelves, wardrobes, and storage cabinets, was prefabricated for precision and assembled on site. The use of full-height glass mirrors and sliding glass partitions not only amplifies light and space but also introduces flexibility, allowing the interior to shift between open, interactive areas and private retreats. The kitchen and bathroom feature meticulously installed marble surfaces, underscoring the commitment to craftsmanship and quality.
The design team overcame significant challenges inherent to working within a protected historic building, particularly the need to preserve architectural integrity while adapting the space for modern needs. The original apartment hotel suite's fixed layout required innovative spatial solutions, such as textured glass sliding doors and mirrored surfaces that enhance the sense of openness. Extensive research into iconic local Art Deco interiors informed the design, ensuring that every detail resonates with the spirit of the era. The result is a timeless haven that invites residents and visitors alike to experience the quiet luxury and enduring charm of New York's Upper East Side.
