"Outside In": A Contemporary Take on the Traditional Iranian Courtyard by MA Office Receives International Recognition

MA Office, an acclaimed Iranian architecture studio, has received the Bronze A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award 2025 for its "Outside In" house, located in Hamedan, Iran. This project stands out for its creative reimagining of the classic Persian courtyard, transforming it into a central, year-round living space that bridges tradition and modernity. The award recognizes designs that demonstrate ingenuity, technical excellence, and a positive impact on quality of life, underscoring the significance of MA Office's achievement.

Conceived and executed between 2020 and 2022, the "Outside In" house was inspired by the desire to revitalize the courtyard as a functional, dynamic core within compact urban homes. The design centers on a striking glass cube surrounded by lush greenery, allowing natural light and ventilation to permeate the interior while maintaining a strong connection to nature. The courtyard extends both vertically and horizontally, linking all floors and creating a duplex layout that enhances spatial flow and interaction among living spaces. This approach not only maximizes the use of a modest 220-square-meter plot but also redefines the boundaries between indoor and outdoor environments.

Material selection played a crucial role in the project's success, with the use of Abbas Abad Stone for the façade, marble flooring, natural wood doors, and energy-efficient thermal break windows. These choices blend durability, sustainability, and aesthetic appeal, reflecting MA Office's commitment to merging tradition with contemporary standards. The house's technical specifications-spanning three floors and integrating a yard throughout-demonstrate a thoughtful response to urban challenges and the evolving needs of modern families. The "Outside In" house exemplifies how historical inspiration, research into local context, and innovative design can converge to create spaces that are both beautiful and highly functional.
