House 4021: Award-Winning Modern Seaside Retreat Integrates Architecture with Nature in Danzhou, Hainan

House 4021, designed by Lianhuan Wang and his team, redefines the concept of a coastal vacation home by seamlessly integrating architectural innovation with the serene landscape of Danzhou, Hainan. Completed in May 2021, this 2,583-square-meter residence utilizes staggered terraced massing to minimize its visual impact along the coastline, evoking the organic growth of a plant from the shore. The design's minimalist approach, featuring natural materials and open spaces, fosters a harmonious relationship between the built environment and its lush surroundings.

The project's rooftop ecological garden and infinity pool, planted with indigenous species, provide guests with a tranquil retreat that celebrates the region's biodiversity. The building's aluminum facade panels, adorned with patterns inspired by waves and sand, shift in appearance with sunlight and offer exceptional weather resistance, ensuring longevity in the challenging seaside climate. Dedicated elevators and thoughtfully separated recreation areas enhance privacy and relaxation for guests, while a closed garden with hanging plants on the fourth floor serves as an ecological barrier and visual delight.

House 4021's design was informed by extensive research into the local environment, resulting in a structure that echoes the contours of the mountains and the rhythm of the ocean. Parametric design techniques enabled the creation of terraced setbacks, optimizing both landscape integration and thermal performance. This approach not only provides effective passive shading for guest rooms but also ensures unobstructed views of the surrounding natural beauty. The project's innovative solutions and commitment to sustainability have earned it the Iron A' Design Award in Architecture, Building, and Structure Design for 2025, recognizing its contribution to modern, environmentally conscious vacation living.
