FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Pedro Sunyé's Single Wall Residence has garnered international acclaim by winning the Silver A' Design Award 2025 in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category. Conceived between 2021 and 2022 and realized in Angra dos Reis by 2024, the project stands out for its bold use of an 80-meter-long pressed bamboo wall that organizes the entire program, separates leisure from service areas, and supports a suspended bedroom volume. The design responds to its unique setting between mountains and sea, offering a continuous, contemplative living experience that blurs the boundary between interior and exterior spaces.
The residence's architecture is defined by its raw materiality, featuring exposed concrete, pressed bamboo, and Brazilian marble as the protagonists. Advanced structural techniques, such as post-tensioned concrete, enable impressive spans of up to 12.5 meters and a 6.5-meter cantilever, while vernacular methods like ribbed formwork and the use of raw wood props maintain a tactile connection to traditional craftsmanship. The bamboo wall, produced in China, serves both structural and aesthetic functions, concealing technical spaces and supporting the home's open, hospitality-inspired layout.
Functionality and environmental comfort are achieved through thoughtful design: circulation is guided by the linear wall, glass panels fully retract to merge indoor and outdoor environments, and cross ventilation, natural light, and strategic shading minimize reliance on artificial systems. The project's clarity and simplicity required rigorous attention to detail and precision throughout construction, ensuring the conceptual essence was preserved. The result is a minimalist, landscape-driven home that exemplifies material honesty, spatial fluidity, and a seamless integration with its tropical surroundings.
The Single Wall Residence not only demonstrates technical and artistic excellence but also invites reflection on the value of architectural simplicity. By prioritizing openness, functional concealment, and constructive efficiency, Pedro Sunyé's design challenges conventional complexity and sets a new benchmark for contemporary residential architecture.
