PORTUGAL -- /ENTERPRISE/newswire -- Sep 09, 2024

Bioplates: Award-Winning Biodegradable Tableware Redefines Sustainability in Hospitality

Bioplates, designed by Alex Hell and the Studioneves team in collaboration with the University of Aveiro and Sublime Hotel, have been recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Design Award for Sustainable Products in 2025. Developed in Lisbon, Portugal, Bioplates address the hospitality industry's need for elegant, high-performance tableware that is fully compostable and environmentally responsible. The project began in January 2024, with extensive research into biopolymers and rigorous technical testing, culminating in a product that merges durability, aesthetic appeal, and true circularity.

Unlike conventional melamine or porcelain, which persist in landfills for centuries, Bioplates are crafted from a proprietary, patent-pending biopolymer blend reinforced with natural minerals. The plates withstand temperatures up to 140°C and endure over 7,000 industrial dishwasher cycles without degrading or releasing microplastics. Their textured surfaces conceal cutlery marks, while engraved messages on the underside encourage diners to reflect on sustainability. Bioplates are lightweight, stackable, and suitable for both indoor and outdoor luxury service, offering a regenerative and carbon-negative solution for eco-conscious hotels and restaurants.

Production utilizes precision injection molding with stainless steel molds, ensuring consistency and minimal post-processing. The material is TUV certified for biodegradation in soil, marine, and compost environments, and the packaging is entirely plastic-free, using only recycled, compostable paper. Real-world testing is currently underway in select hospitality venues, with feedback being gathered to further refine the product. By uniting scientific innovation, design excellence, and environmental stewardship, Bioplates set a new standard for sustainable tableware in the professional sector.
