Kei Harada's Oyane Saikaitoki Redefines the Saikai Porcelain Shopping Experience
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Renowned designer Kei Harada has transformed the Saikai porcelain shop and gallery, Oyane Saikaitoki, located in Hasami Town, Nagasaki, Japan. The project aimed to capture the essence of the Saikai porcelain artists while revamping the internal and external structure of the space.
The shop and gallery now feature a new entrance on the B1 floor, leading to a space that spans across two floors. The redesign incorporates the spirit of the artists using the materials of Saikai porcelain, creating a unique and immersive shopping experience.
The project was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2020, recognizing its outstanding expertise, innovation, and remarkable level of excellence.
The redesign involved the construction of a new entrance to improve access to the shop, along with a large staircase and elevator guiding visitors to the expansive shop space. The innovative design also includes provisions for events and workshops to promote the art of Saikai porcelain.
The outdoor area features a floor and stairs made from washed-out mortar pottery debris, a steel frame with a galvanized finish and urethane coating, and a roof made of Galvalume steel plate. The signage is crafted from porcelain, adding a unique touch to the exterior.
Internally, the space boasts an acrylic floor coating, porcelain sagger walls, a skeleton ceiling, and plywood furniture. The pendant lights are also made from porcelain, adding to the cohesive design theme.
The shop and gallery cover an indoor area of 140ã¡ and an outdoor area of 1150ã¡, including a 25.92ã¡ restroom. The redesign has redefined the shopping experience for Saikai porcelain enthusiasts, offering a space that truly reflects the artistry and craftsmanship of the renowned porcelain.
