U-Comfort: Redefining Rattan Chairs

Junge Chen's U-Comfort rattan chair combines traditional craftsmanship with modern technology, featuring a circular closed-ring structure for both aesthetics and support. The chair's unique design reflects the soft and tough nature of rattan, achieved through innovative wire construction and bi-directional topological computing software Ameba.

This rattan chair stands out with its overall round and smooth shape, making it suitable for various environments, from home to leisure spots. The project, which began in April 2022 in Chongzhou and concluded in January 2024 in Chengdu, overcame challenges in topology optimization calculation and AI design integration.

Dimensions: L850mm, W640mm, H870mm

Rattan weaving, involving processes such as tanning, dyeing, and lacquering, was utilized to create the U-Comfort chair. The project involved a team effort, including members Yang Jian, Li Qi, Xiao Xiao, and others. The design was inspired by non-heritage culture, reflecting a blend of tradition and innovation.

U-Comfort's unique blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology, along with its striking design, has earned it the Bronze A' Design Award in 2024. The chair's aesthetic and functional qualities make it a standout addition to any space, offering comfort and style in equal measure.
