Award-winning designer Udo Hubert Dagenbach unveils the Historical Park, a blend of recreation and memorial, in Berlin

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Historical Park: A Unique Blend of Recreation and Memorial

Renowned designer Udo Hubert Dagenbach has unveiled the Historical Park, a groundbreaking project that seamlessly combines a recreational park with a memorial in Berlin. The park, known as Geschichtspark Moabit, is a testament to the city's historical significance and serves as a unique space for both reflection and relaxation.

The park's design incorporates elements of land art and minimal art to narrate the historically meaningful space, which was once the site of the Prussian prison. The star-shaped buildings are conveyed through a series of elevated and sunken grass sections and hedges, symbolizing the historical significance of the area.

The park's architectural elements are made of sandblasted, beige-colored concrete, mirroring the color of the joints of the old remaining brick wall from the former prison. The existing trees are left as visible layers of time, and red-leafed book trees as hedges represent the former prison cell structure.

The park spans approximately 2.8 hectares, with 330 meters of the old prison wall restored to its original 4 to 5-meter height. The park features three entrances, each equipped with informational panels explaining the historical and architectural significance of the park.

One of the unique features of the park is a sound installation in a prison cell that activates upon entry, playing poems from former prisoners and knocking sound codes for about 5 minutes. Additionally, a poem from a former prisoner during the Nazi period is inscribed on the inside of the prison wall, adding a poignant layer of historical significance to the space.

Udo Hubert Dagenbach's innovative approach to blending historical significance with recreational space has earned the Historical Park the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in Landscape Planning and Garden Design in 2017. The park stands as a testament to Dagenbach's boundary-crossing design between land art and regular landscape architecture, offering new possibilities for urban landscapes around the world.
