Coastal Mansion: A Unique Blend of Architecture and Coastal Public Space

Zhubo Design CO., LTD. proudly presents the Coastal Mansion, a pavilion design that stands on the shore of Xiamen Tong'anwan Bay, China. The project, completed in 2017, is a testament to the seamless integration of architecture and the surrounding coastal environment.

The Coastal Mansion is a public building that serves as a multifunctional space for exhibitions, reading, physical exercise, and as a coastal walkway station. The design team, led by Director Yang Weizhong, aimed to maximize the public coastal space and provide a stage for citizens' daily leisure activities while showcasing the city's image and cultural context.

The pavilion's unique properties lie in its open floor design, which liberates the ground floor space, directly embracing nature and creating a multilayered spatial sequence. The facade, composed of horizontal grilles of aluminum panels, changes the daylighting rate based on a rotation logic, ensuring a harmonious integration of functionality and form.

The Coastal Mansion spans an area of 1846sqm and is a result of in-depth research on local buildings in Southern Fujian, interpreting the flowing quality of the ocean. The design team overcame the challenge of endowing the building with a public attribute, creating a smooth shared public landscape axis that links up all public nodes in the community.
