Vincent Hsieh Transforms a Taipei Basement into a 5-Zone Urban Jungle, Indoor Beach Bar, and Garden Cafe

Step into a tropical paradise in the heart of Taipei with the newly opened Gumgum Garden, a unique restaurant pub designed by Vincent Hsieh. The 530 square meter space, located in the basement of a 30-year-old building next to Taipei 101, offers an exotic indoor dining experience that transports guests to an island country beach bar.

Hsieh's design focuses on creating an atmosphere that feels like a relaxing getaway, featuring five distinct zones: lounge in the sand, island beach bar, rock cave dining, garden cafe, and jungle seat box. Each zone offers a different ambiance, allowing returning customers to enjoy a new experience with every visit.

The restaurant is children and pet-friendly and has become a popular destination in Taiwan, perfect for commercial events in rainy Taipei. Collaborations with brands like Prada, LG, and LINE TV have further elevated its appeal.

The project, which started in September 2020 and officially opened in March 2021, posed unique challenges, including creating a relaxing atmosphere under a complex pipe system and incorporating natural materials into an indoor space. However, Hsieh's vision and hands-on construction experience successfully transformed the space into a captivating oasis.

With its unique design and successful realization, Gumgum Garden was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2022, recognizing its outstanding and creatively ingenious design that brings a vacation experience to the heart of the city.
