Updesign introduces the OCT OHBAY wayfinding signage system, drawing inspiration from coastal elements to provide a safe and high-quality waterfront experience for citizens in Shenzhen, China.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Updesign has unveiled the OCT OHBAY wayfinding signage system, a unique and innovative solution designed to enhance the coastal park experience in Shenzhen, China. The system, inspired by sea waves and gravels, aims to provide citizens with a safe and high-quality waterfront environment, integrating multifunctional spaces including a high-end shopping mall and various event venues.
Both the civic park and the commercial space are seamlessly connected through the use of interactive visual signs, unifying the cognition toward the complex's functions. The outdoor sign boards, emphasizing the completeness and solidness of gravels, are designed to withstand hurricane-level winds and are illuminated in blue for navigation at night, expressing the ocean elements.
The wayfinding signage system is strategically placed throughout the park, with outdoor sign boards resembling gravels scattered along the paths, while interior sign boards take the shape of sea waves, interlocking the geometrical building volumes. This design approach creates a cohesive and immersive experience, where coastal elements are revealed everywhere, providing visitors with a sense of connection to the sea.
The project, located in the Baoâan District of Shenzhen, Guangdong, China, was realized in February 2020, following extensive research and analysis of the city's urban planning and citizens' needs for waterfront visual factors. The design team, led by Zhang Yi, creatively overcame the challenge of integrating a unified wayfinding signage system into the diverse architectural styles of the surrounding environment, achieving a minimalist yet visually generous solution.
As the founder and leader of Updesign, Zhang Yi has been at the forefront of environmental vision and signage design in China and globally. The OCT OHBAY wayfinding signage system has been recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in 2022, showcasing its practicality, innovation, and ability to meet professional and industrial requirements.
