Kevin Chu's Neoerba, meaning NewGrass, is a sustainable art installation made from recycled electronic waste, illuminating the night entirely by the power of the sun.

Kevin Chu, the founder of Creazione Sugo, conceived the TCLGreen project, Neoerba, in response to a request from Warner Bros and TCL to recycle electronic waste into an artistic creation. Inspired by a grass field in Roseto deli Abruzzi, Italy, Chu utilized the abstracted digital geometry of individual blades of grass to create this innovative installation. The project was completed on September 10th, 2022, and won the prestigious A' Circular Economy and Regenerative Design Award in 2023.
The installation comprises 42 totems made from discarded PCB computer circuit boards, each handcrafted with an internal hollow steel structure and integrated with photovoltaic LED flood lights for sustainable night-time illumination. Additionally, a bioluminescent paint and a specially formulated photocatalytic coating, similar to that used by NASA, were applied to purify the atmosphere from viruses, bacteria, and pollutants, activated only with sunlight and moving air biomimicry from the process of photosynthesis.
Chu's immersive Virtual Reality Artwork allows Neoerba to enter the metaverse, providing an alternative dimension and meaning to the installation. The entire project was realized using upcycled computer PCB circuit boards, galvanized steel structures, low VOC paint, and other sustainable materials. The installation is entirely activated by sustainable energy and does not require any operation, functioning as a catalyst for sustainable art and environmental improvement.
Chu's innovative approach to recycling electronic waste into a large-scale art installation presented numerous challenges, including time constraints, logistic hurdles, and unprecedented environmental conditions. Despite these obstacles, the project successfully transformed electronic waste into a groundbreaking and sustainable work of art, bridging the gap between physical objects and the metaverse.
