Silence Mirror: A Minimalist, Zen-Inspired Apartment Transformation Recognized for Design Excellence

Shibui design atelier's latest project, "Silence Mirror," has received the prestigious Bronze A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award for 2025, recognizing its outstanding achievement in blending minimalist aesthetics with practical living. Completed in December 2023 in Taiwan, the renovation reimagines a 112.3-square-meter, 50-year-old apartment into a serene retreat, reflecting the owner's desire for simplicity and comfort after years abroad. The design draws inspiration from Japanese Zen philosophy, utilizing clean lines, natural materials, and a reduction of unnecessary ornamentation to foster a sense of peace and clarity.

The transformation involved reconfiguring the original compartmentalized layout to create a more open, fluid living space tailored for two occupants and their pet. By removing walls and expanding communal areas, the designers enhanced circulation and maximized usable space. Storage solutions are strategically concentrated in core areas, minimizing cabinetry and clutter while ensuring functionality. Materials such as mineral paint, travertine, wood veneer, and eco-friendly latex paint were chosen for their natural textures and calming visual impact, with large-format tiles and sliding glass doors further contributing to the apartment's airy, harmonious atmosphere.

Throughout the renovation, Shibui design atelier overcame significant structural and material challenges, including upgrading outdated electrical and plumbing systems and meticulously balancing aesthetics with functionality. The result is a home that not only meets the owner's needs but also exemplifies the studio's commitment to Zen-inspired, subtractive design. The project's success is reflected in the owners' satisfaction with the improved storage, flexible spaces, and overall tranquility, making "Silence Mirror" a model for contemporary minimalist living and a deserving recipient of international design acclaim.
