Los Angeles-based designer Johnny Jiasheng Chen and the Forenext Design Team have been honored with the Silver A' Design Award 2025 for Syn, a universal, mechanical calendar that reimagines traditional timekeeping with a unique, non-digital approach, blending Lo-Tek philosophy and modern usability.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Johnny Jiasheng Chen's Syn calendar, developed in collaboration with the Forenext Design Team, has been recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in the Decorative Items and Homeware category for 2025. Syn stands out as a universal, three-dimensional mechanical planner that offers a tactile and visually engaging alternative to digital calendars. Drawing inspiration from Lo-Tek design principles and traditional knowledge, Syn bridges the gap between historical innovation and contemporary needs, providing a fresh perspective on organizing time.
Unlike conventional planners, Syn features a clock-like structure with laser-cut acrylic or glass pointers, engraved aluminum frames, and color-coded markers. Users interact with the calendar by manually adjusting pointers to display dates and events, while engraved marks indicate hours of the day. This design not only accommodates any month or date configuration but also encourages a more mindful, hands-on approach to planning, free from electronic distractions. The universal layout and mechanical operation make Syn adaptable for various time intervals and user preferences.
Syn was conceptualized and realized in Los Angeles between January and June 2024, with the project showcased online. The design process involved extensive research into non-electric structures and the challenges of creating a flexible, universally applicable calendar. By overcoming the limitations of traditional formats, Syn delivers an innovative solution that merges form, function, and a renewed appreciation for physical interaction in everyday organization. The Silver A' Design Award recognizes Syn's remarkable technical and artistic achievement, celebrating its contribution to both design and daily life.
