Pure Interior Design's latest project, "Unfinished Journey," has garnered international recognition by winning the Iron A' Design Award 2025 in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category. Located in Taoyuan, Taiwan, this residential renovation reimagines a house with over sixty years of history, transforming it into a living testament to both past and present. The design, led by Vivian Chiu and Ke Ye Wu, was inspired by the home's unique character and the desire to honor decades of family memories, allowing original materials and the traces of time to become integral to daily life.
The project's standout feature is its innovative use of exposed steel systems, which not only reinforce the aging structure but also serve as a visual anchor throughout the space. By embracing a subtractive approach, the team preserved original red bricks and concrete, treating them with breathable coatings to maintain their authentic texture while improving durability. Flexible layouts, adaptive furniture, and movable elements ensure that the home evolves alongside its inhabitants, offering a rare blend of understated industrial beauty and practical functionality seldom seen in residential design.
"Unfinished Journey" was realized through meticulous research and collaboration with engineers, builders, and local craftsmen. The team overcame significant challenges, including severe humidity damage and the absence of original construction records, by employing custom-fabricated steel frames and adaptive reuse strategies. The result is a sustainable, memory-rich environment where sunlight, tactile materials, and open spaces foster a seamless flow between living, working, and reflective moments. This award-winning project not only revitalizes a cherished family home but also establishes a replicable model for sustainable renovation in aging buildings worldwide.
