Datalense: Award-Winning Interactive Data Visualization System Enhancing Library Engagement and Experience

Datalense, developed by Alibaba Cloud's design team, is a groundbreaking intelligent data system installed at the entrance of Beijing City Library. Spanning an impressive 18 meters wide and 3 meters tall, the interactive screen blends advanced data visualization with evocative natural themes, inspired by the nostalgia of reading in nature. The system's user interface features elements reminiscent of valleys, streams, and seasonal landscapes, while its functional design allows visitors to explore detailed 3D models of the library, access information about exhibitions, collections, and real-time environmental data, and interact with the display through both touch and remote devices.

The creation of Datalense was driven by the need to revitalize library engagement in an era dominated by fragmented digital content and declining deep reading habits. By integrating Alibaba Cloud's DataV and CityV engines, the system delivers dynamic digital twin scenarios with real-time rendering, supported by radar sensors and a suite of design tools including Unreal Engine and C4D. The platform's modular architecture and AI-generated content enable seamless transitions between themes, such as day/night cycles and seasonal changes, ensuring a continually fresh and immersive user experience. Multiple users can interact simultaneously, with custom scene transitions and animated feedback enhancing engagement for all ages.

Datalense's innovative approach has not only enhanced the spatial and informational experience for library visitors but also set a new benchmark for digital transformation in public spaces. The project overcame significant challenges, including the need for efficient information delivery in a high-traffic area and the integration of complex data into an intuitive, visually appealing format. Recognized with the Platinum A' Interface, Interaction and User Experience Design Award in 2025, Datalense exemplifies how thoughtful design and technology can foster cultural exchange, promote intelligent development, and redefine the role of libraries in the digital age.
